In January 2010, MACS paid for the training of 68 volunteers. These local people are recruited by several community organizations in the vicinity.   The main objective of the training is to equip these caregivers with the necessary knowledge and skills on how to provide effective care for the chronically sick in their own homes. Topics covered include facts about sexually transmitted diseases and HIV; Human rights, infection prevention and control in the home.

Trainees are taught basic care skills and encouraged to offer psycho-social support and to reduce stigma and discrimination. A second group of volunteers were  trained this year.    The objective of the volunteer training is to support the communities as they deal with the burden of AIDS and associated illnesses, to reduce stigma, to support caregivers and provide understanding for those taking anti-retroviral drugs, encouraging adherence.

The  training  was  facilitated  by  four  full time  facilitators  namely : Mr. J. Zulu - District Home  Based  Care  Coordinator, Mrs  .M.Juma – Home  Based  Care Trainer (both from Zomba DHO),Mr .S. Langisi-PHC  Coordinator  and  I. Lajabu – Home  Based  Care  Coordinator St. Lukes  plus one  part  time  facilitator  from  St  Luke’s  palliative  care Unit  Programme. The  content  of  the  training  was  taken  from  Ministry  of  Health  Training  Manual  for  volunteers  in  community  home  based  and  palliative  care.
