MACS was asked to support two 3 day workshops on Likoma Island and Chizumulu Island to work with parents, guardians, health workers and chiefs to improve knowledge and understanding of the needs of Disabled Children.

Participants from Chizumulu were 20 parents, 6 local chiefs and 10 health workers

Participants from Likoma were 35 parents/ guardians, 13 local chiefs and 11 health workers.

Topics covered included rights, sanitation and hygiene, immunisation , disability programmes, social welfare, community rehabilitation, HIV/Aids,  nutrition and resource management.

Parents with Disabled Children for the first time met together with health workers and local chiefs during the Capacity Building training on behalf of Disabled Children .After wards Local chiefs with help from health workers called meeting of parents with Disabled Children to elect Committee that will take the role of addressing the issues of acceptance of child’s condition and promotion their rights.

Because allowances are not paid by MACS the participants accepted that they would eat lunch together and found this conducive to sharing and exchanging views.
