In 2008, the 42 year old water supply from the Likwenu River to the institutions and local community around Malosa was in urgent need of upgrading. The hospital, College of Nursing, primary and secondary schools, Chilema Ecumenical Lay Training Centre, Diocesan Headquarters and local community were often without water. The population of 4000 people dependent on this supply is estimated to rise to 6,300 by 2028

  New Dam

The project became possible when MACS received a generous legacy. Trustees were able to work with a local committee comprising representatives from the six institutions and local community. The Blantyre based firm of Willy and Partner Engineering Services, ably led by Mr Willy Mandowa was appointed to manage the upgrading.

This is the largest project ever undertaken by MACS. Phase 1 has included:

  • Surveying the existing dam, pipelines and tanks on the 500 acre hillside site and making recommendations.
  • Rebuilding the dam and diversion weir and protecting the surrounds with vetiver grass.
  • Installing a gauging station to monitor the flow of the Likwenu River.
  • Building a 230 square metre reinforced concrete sedimentation and storage tanke
  • Repairing or installing new storage tanks for each of the six institutions
  • Providing meters for all institutions
Training maintenance staff and providing written notes

New Tank

Phase 2 will comprise replacing the 42 year old asbestos 120mm main  pipeline. This leads down the mountainside from the dam, over rocky ground and will be a major undertaking to ensure a permanent and reliable supply of water.
