Introduction.

MACS has had a busy year, but there has been the fall in income that we expected. The previous year was exceptional with a large donation, a legacy and money from Aspect Capital. Our income for this year, as you can see from the financial report was £144,876. A total of £173,464 has been spent in Malawi during the year, some of the income from the previous year had been held over and was spent early on. This year, money has also been kept in this country, mainly for specific projects about which we needed more information or the recipients were not ready to start work. The exchange rate with the Kwacha is so volatile, it does not make sense to send out money until it is needed.

The Board of Trustees has met approximately every 2 months throughout the year. We were delighted to have elected 3 new trustees at the last AGM. Bazil Arden, Veronica Dubbey and Christine Matthews. Geoff Stone has had to resign as he has moved with his family to South Africa.

Margaret Parr made her annual visit to Malawi in June/July last year and monitored many projects with Grafiud Tione. His help is proving invaluable in visiting projects, contacting beneficiaries, sorting out queries in applications and generally providing feedback to trustees throughout the year.

Projects.

Over the year the following range of projects have been supported.

Churches and clergy houses. ( £21,365)
The requests for new churches and repairing old ones seems never ending. We have, largely, stuck to the plan of funding one church from each diocese after each meeting. This does not always work out, some dioceses have greater needs than others. Similarly the need to build and repair clergy houses is infinite.

Education (£64,802)

Another £20,000 has gone to rebuild the hostels at Malosa secondary school. We had sent £30,000 the previous year. These funds were mainly form a grant made by Aspect Capital More money is still needed for three further hostels but we can repport that the first is complete and ready for occupation.
We have continued to send out bursary money for students at St Michael’s, Malosa and Community Secondary schools. The decision was made to send out £1,500 each term and the schools work out how many students they can support. The funds for bursaries mainly come from a group of young men who visited Malosa whilst at Lancing College some years ago.
Money has also gone to Mtendere, Mchokola, Mkope Blind school, Mpondas, Chalenga, amongst many others. We have also sent money to repair or build teacher’s houses and for a library in Monkey Bay. Money has also gone to build a community library at Wungwero. Sometimes the money needed can be quite small eg £220 needed to repair a laboratory roof at Malindi CSS but without the money buildings soon fall down.

Health (£16,792)

We are still supporting St Luke’s hospital, St Anne’s Nkhotakota and St Martin’s Malindi. St Anne’s have been sent money to buy 2 oxygen concentrators which are proving invaluable. Matope labour ward is completed and has been opened. We have also set aside money to buy an ambulance for St Martin’s Malindi. The need there was great.

AIDS/Orphan projects ( £18,194)

The needs are still enormous. We get many requests to help with AIDS projects, especially for buildings for orphan nursery classes and adult education and counselling The anti retroviral drugs are beginning to reach a larger percentage of the population, but not everyone yet gets them. We continue to support orphans at St Luke’s and Malindi regularly and have assisted groups at Chisomo, Chingwenya and Katema. We also get requests to fund workshops to raise awareness of the dangers of AIDS among young people and married couples.

Famine Relief and Food security ( £31,572)

You will be aware that Malawi faced another famine at the end of last year and the beginning of 2006. Thanks to the generosity of our donors we were able to send out money immediately. £18,444 went to the Primary School feeding programme run by Mr Bushili. £6000 was used in parishes in the Blantyre Archdeaconry and smaller sums elsewhere for alleviating hunger and for food security projects..

Water projects (8,599)

We have sent money to desilt the dam at Malosa which supplies the water for the whole diocesan site including St Luke’s hospital, as well as funding boreholes. Currently MACS is investigating a link with Playpumps. Another organisation will provide the pumps and set them up, if we can locate the boreholes with clean water and a good supply. The idea is that children in the area, play on the ‘roundabout’ and this pumps the water into an overhead tank. Talks are going on with UNICEF in Lilongwe at present and the organisation hope to start installing the pumps either by the end of this year or early next.

Miscellaneous (£12,140)

Money has gone to a variety of small projects. We have sent money for books and the Lamp magazine for all Anglican clergy which they receive every two months. We have also funded some women’s courses.
